Clandon Park Estate
The Proposals
New landscaping designed by John Phibbs, the UK’s leading expert on Capability Brown, to create a quieter, greener and more cohesive historic landscape. The aim is to secure the wider context of Clandon Park, improve its environmental value, and help remove the park from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
Improvements to biodiversity and creation of new habitats for wildlife, with significantly improved conditions for new grassland and tree planting.
Subtle changes to the landform to help slow surface water run-off. A sustainable drainage approach will be used to manage water naturally across the site, without increasing flood risk elsewhere.
A temporary access route to be taken directly from the Merrow Roundabout. This means construction traffic will not be routed through West Clandon village or along local residential roads.
The works would be carried out in phases over an expected period of up to three years. Construction would take place during weekdays only, with no weekend or public holiday working.

Benefits
Protecting a nationally important heritage site
The works form part of a Conservation Management Plan aimed at removing Clandon Park from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, securing its long-term future.
Improved landscape and views
Carefully shaped landforms will better reconnect the park with the surrounding countryside, including views towards Merrow Downs, improving how the area looks both from within the park and from nearby locations.
Improved wildlife and biodiversity
New native tree planting, grassland enhancement and habitat creation will deliver a biodiversity net gain of more than 20%, meaning wildlife value will be improved.
Temporary works with long-term benefits
Construction is expected to last up to three years, but once complete the landscape improvements will be permanent and low-maintenance.
No new buildings
This is a landscaping project only. There are no new houses, commercial buildings, or permanent structures proposed.
Less traffic, noise and light impact in the long term
The new landform will help reduce noise and light pollution from the A25, creating a quieter and more peaceful environment within the park and along nearby public footpaths.
Traffic kept out of West Clandon
Construction traffic will access the site directly from the A25 via a temporary access from the Merrow Roundabout, avoiding Park Lane and The Street through the village.
